I found out in August of 2015 I was expecting my rainbow baby. I knew pretty much right away that I wanted a doula. No offense to my husband but he’s pretty much an idiot when it comes to my emotional cues. I love him though. I knew I needed someone who would be able to provide the kind of emotional support I would need during labor. My mom wasn’t interested in being in the delivery room with me and my sister felt uncomfortable about it. So the doula search began! I Googled doulas that were in my area and read about 100 profiles until I found Stacie. I had a good feeling about her from the start. I emailed several doulas in the Akron/Northeast Ohio area. I felt like goldilocks! There were doulas that were kind of snobby, doulas that were a little too “new age” and doulas that were a little too old school. Stacie emailed me and I decided I’d meet her and decide after that. She was expecting her 3rd child at the time so I already felt a bond! Then we discovered we had a mutual friend and I felt like it was God really guiding us together. During our meet I learned that Stacie is a giant sci-fi nerd much like my husband and I and I knew. I just knew she was the one for me!
Over the course of my pregnancy she checked on me often and made sure she was always avaliable one way or another to answer any of my questions or concerns. When it was finally getting close to D-day she texted me everyday just to make sure I was doing ok. About a week before my due date I had a scare and went to the hospital to be checked out. Stacie was of course right there to help me out and for moral support. Unfortunately it was a false alarm. The next week I started having contractions around 4pm. I waited until they were about 4 minutes apart, called my midwife and headed back up to the hospital. I wasn’t dilating so the Dr on call wanted to send me home. Stacie walked the halls with me for over an hour while we tried to kick things into gear. But alas, my little dude just didn’t want to come out! I can’t even describe how upset I was. I was exhausted and in so much pain. Stacie held me while I just cried from frustration.
Finally at my next Dr’s appointment which was 2 days later I was sent to be induced. I went into the hospital around 1pm on April 25th. We called Stacie about 1am and had her come to the hospital. Had I known that my labor was about to completely stall I probably would’ve let the poor woman get some more sleep! I’m so thankful she was there for me though! My poor husband had worked all night the previous night then came to the hospital and had had practically no sleep. Stacie was that person that I needed in my corner. She made sure I was hydrated. She made sure I had chap stick. She put cool cloths on my forehead. She answered text messages from my family and friends. When it was time to push she held my legs and talked me through everything. When I was ready to give up she kept encouraging me and my husband. When my son was finally born, after 27 hours of labor and 3 hours of pushing, she took pictures for me and made sure I had my time to bond with him. She helped me get our first latch right away, which made nursing so much easier. Stacie even had encouragement at my post delivery visit when I was in the middle of some family drama.
I hope that she will be able to serve as my doula again when my husband and I have another child. She was truly amazing and I appreciate her greatly!
We hired Stacie very last minute, about three weeks before our birth, and couldn’t be happier about it! I had heard doulas helped a lot with labors and births, so I was lucky enough to meet Stacie a few weeks before our due date. Even before my labor, she was very helpful with helping me draft a birth plan and sent very encouraging texts. Especially at the end after my due date passed, she continued to boost my confidence and make me feel great.
On the day I went into labor, I texted her a few times, letting her know things were starting to happen and she helped me stay excited and confident. Things moved quickly, so by the time she got to our house it was time to leave for the hospital. She helped me stay confident after I had my bloody show and reassured me it was normal, but definitely time to get going. At the hospital, she was there to help with positive words and encouragement, and rubbed my back in the most perfect way during contractions. She knew exactly what to do to help ease the pressure the best she could.
I am extremely happy with my birth story, and Stacie helped immensely with my confidence, as well as my husband’s. We were very lucky to find her last minute, and I would recommend her to anyone! Thank you for helping make our birth story amazing!
