Pregnancy and the Common Cold-How to Find Relief

It’s the middle of winter, and at least in my area of the country cold and flu season has officially begun. I have had many colds while pregnant and wanted to share some of my go-to natural remedies for the common cold while pregnant.

1. Honey

Honey is great for soothing a sore throat. It coats the throat therefore allieving the pain, and also helps to keep the throats from getting dry. Add some to your favorite tea.

2. Steam

Steam from a bath or shower can do wonders for clearing your sinuses. Turn on the hot water and stand in the bathroom until you start to feel some nasal relief. The heat from the water will also help with those aches and pains. Alternatively, you can boil a pot of water and then breathe in the steam with a towel over your head and the bowl to lock in the steam.

3. Water

Drinking water is always important during pregnancy, but especially when you have a cold. Staying hydrated will help the mucus to stay thin and easily drain away.

4. Cough Drops

Cough drops are a great and safe way to get some quick relief from a cough or sore throat.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV creates an alkaline environment that most illnesses can’t thrive in. It also contains good bacteria that can fight off infections. Mix a tablespoon of ACV into water or tea and drink 3 times a day. Or, gargle with ACV to soothe a sore throat.

6. Rest

This one is easier said than done, especially if you have other children to care for. However the best thing you can do for your body is to give it the rest it needs. Plan a movie day for the kids, order take-out, and spend as much time as you can resting on the couch or in bed.
