Im a little behind on posting this, but better late than never, right? Iris turned one on the 8th but we had her party a week later. Iris means “rainbow” (hence why the iris is the colored part of the eye) so I thought a rainbow theme would be both cute and personable. There were several different ways I thought of going with a rainbow theme. My Little Pony, Care Bears, and Wizard of Oz all had a rainbow theme entertained in them. In the end, I decided to just go with a simple rainbow and focus on bright colors. I liked the idea of the house being full of bright colors on a gray, cold January day.
My biggest concern while planning this party was that it would end up being cancelled due to either bad weather or sickness. Unfortunately, my fears came true as there was not only an ice storm expected for that weekend, but several guests had come down with colds and the flu. I went back and forth on if I should cancel the party or not. In the end, my parents and a few close friends came over to celebrate our little Iris. It wasn’t the big party I had planned, but it was a sweet time of celebrating, and I’m glad we could still celebrate her big day. We felt bad so many of our friends and family had to miss out, but we also completely understood. Some things are just not in our control, and Ohio weather and winter illnesses in January are a couple of those things 😉
Decorating for the party was pretty easy. I found the plates, napkins, Happy Birthday sign, and the backdrop at Target. Cups, cutlery and balloons came from Walmart.
I prefer to keep the food simple. After all, there’s so much that goes into planning and hosting a birthday party, I didn’t want to overwhelm myself with an elaborate menu. We had shredded chicken sandwiches as the main dish. Potato chips, veggie tray, and an apple and cheese tray rounded out lunch. The kids and I went shopping at B.A. Sweeties (the largest candy warehouse in the country!) for candy and lollipops and I special ordered a rainbow cupcake cake from my friend Audrey at Michelangelo’s Bakery for the occasion. The cupcakes were exactly what I had envisioned and tasted so good! We had 3 different flavors-white, chocolate, and red velvet. I think they were all my favorite. I am not even a little sad that I have leftovers in my freezer 😉
When it came time for the smash cake, Iris did not hesitate at all! Not only does she look and act like her Mama, but I’m afraid she’s inherited my sweet tooth as well! It was so fun watching her dig into that chocolate cupcake!
Iris, you are our sweet baby girl and just like your name represents, you have brought so much color and beauty to our world this year ❤️ We love you forever and are over the rainbow excited to see what this next year has in store for you!
