Words are extremely powerful. Whether they are spoken or written they can leave a lasting effect on us. Positive words build us up and make us feel as though anything is possible. On the other hand, negativity can cause us to doubt our abilities and make us feel failure is inevitable.
I wrote out birth affirmations while pregnant with my second child. I would say them out loud each day until I had them memorized and believed what I was saying. When labor started I naturally started saying my birth mantras to myself. I was relaxed and calm the entire time. I had a wonderful (albeit surprising–blog post on that coming soon!) labor experience and I truly believe that it was because I had prepared myself mentally, not just physically, for labor.

I joyfully welcome each surge, knowing each one brings me closer to the birth of my baby
When I think I can’t, that’s when I know I’m near the end. I persevere for my baby

I see my baby coming smoothly from my womb
My baby’s birth will be easy because I am so relaxed
Like a flower, my body opens at the perfect time
